Yesterday, the San Francisco County Transportation Board approved $57.2 million in Proposition K funds for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Central Subway Project.

The funds will enable the agency to purchase two tunnel boring machines and construct the tunnel launch box for the Guideway Tunnel. SFMTA’s board recently approved a $233 million contract for the tunnel construction.

The $1.5 billion Central Subway is the second phase of the Third Street light-rail project, which calls for building a 1.7-mile extension of the T Third Line to connect communities between Visitacion Valley and Chinatown. To date, SFMTA has received $92 million in federal New Starts funding for the project. The Central Subway is scheduled to open in 2018.

Proposition K is an initiative approved by San Francisco voters in 2003 that sets aside local tax dollars to finance transportation infrastructure improvements. The Central Subway project is included in Proposition K’s 30-year Transportation Expenditure Plan.
