On Sept. 1, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) board authorized a $22.1 million contract with Gordon N. Ball Inc. to construct the Kato Road grade separation in Fremont, Calif. Construction is scheduled to begin in October.

A joint effort between VTA and the city of Fremont, the project calls for grade separating a road from a Union Pacific Railroad line. Once the project is complete in spring 2013, the road will pass underneath UP tracks and future Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) tracks, which are being built as part of the Silicon Valley extension.

Gordon N. Ball will construct a steel UP bridge, cast-in-place reinforced concrete maintenance bridge and reinforced concrete BART bridge spanning over Kato Road. The project also includes relocating sanitary sewer facilities, installing a pump station, removing and replacing impacted landscape, and completing traffic improvements in the area.

“This grade separation will both enable frequent BART service in the future and reduce congestion in the area that has previously been caused by freight movements,” said VTA Chairperson Margaret Abe-Koga in a prepared statement.
