Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend $3.1 million to upgrade track between Alton and Sheldon, Iowa.

Scheduled to start tomorrow, the project calls for installing 17,700 ties, spreading 11,600 tons of rock ballast and replacing road surfaces at 19 grade crossings. UP expects to complete trackwork by mid-May.

The project is part of UP's $1.6 billion capex budget for 2008.
