Rail News: Maintenance Of Way
The construction industry’s mantra long has been “on time and on budget.” For Union Pacific Railroad, a trackwork project in the Los Angeles area met one goal and exceeded the other.
Crews recently completed the $38 million project — which involved two mainlines running through 11 cities — nearly seven days ahead of schedule. Work began Jan. 2 and had been scheduled to conclude at March’s end.
Workers installed more than 93,000 concrete ties; replaced 36 miles of straight rail, 1,800 feet of curved rail and 33 turnouts; spread 110,000 tons of ballast; and replaced surfaces at 18 grade crossings.
