UP eyes trackwork in Missouri, earns pipe industry award

Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend about $38.2 million to upgrade portions of a line between Labadie and Jefferson City, Mo.
To be completed by the end of July, the project calls for replacing about 66 miles of rail, renewing surfaces at 55 grade crossings and replacing 14 switches. The trackwork is part of UP’s $3.6 billion capital spending budget for 2012.
On March 28, Progressive Railroading will release Maintenance of Way Spending Report 2012, which will provide details on UP’s MOW program this year, as well detailed program information from other Class Is and dozens of regionals, short lines and passenger railroads. Meanwhile, UP also announced it was named Logistics/Transportation Provider of the Year at the 2012 American Metals Market Steel Tube and Pipe Conference. The award recognizes a transportation or distribution company that best meets the needs of the tube and pipe industry. Award criteria includes customer support, service, on-time pick-up and delivery, fuel cost containment, safety and technology.
UP, which was honored for its Pipeline Express service, “recognizes the importance of providing a turnkey operation to the pipe industry, and is constantly striving to improve the logistics of transporting these materials as safely and efficiently as possible,” said Eric Butler, vice president and general manager-industrial products.
