Yesterday, Union Pacific Railroad began moving trains on a Canadian National Railway Co./Illinois Central Railroad line in western Iowa so the Class I could begin rehabilitating its line that parallels CN/IC's.
Located between Arion and Council Bluffs, the CN/IC line usually averages one train per day. Through mid-July, UP will move up to 20 trains over the line daily.
UP plans to spend $20 million to improve track between Carroll and Council Bluffs. The two-month project includes installing 71,900 concrete and 13,600 wood ties, spreading 127,000 tons of rock ballast and replacing surfaces at 32 grade crossings.
