Union Pacific Railroad today will begin a major tie replacement project along 40 miles of the Metra UP-West Line in Chicago.

The project involves replacing 90,000 ties on all three tracks between Chicago and Elburn, a west-side suburb. To complete the project on time, crews will work every day of the week, with a majority of activity to take place overnight. Work is expected to conclude by Sept. 30.

“Tie replacement is essential and must be done at regular intervals to maintain track speeds and service levels, especially on a line like the UP-West that sees a significant amount of freight traffic in addition to commuter service,” said Metra Executive Director and CEO Jim Derwinski in a press release.
