Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend about $5 million to upgrade 35 miles of track between Pleasant Hill and Independence, Mo.
To be completed by mid-October, the work involves removing and installing 21,800 ties, replacing more than one mile of rail in various curves, renewing surfaces at 44 grade crossings and spreading 16,000 tons of ballast.
The project is part of UP’s $3.3 billion capital spending budget for 2011.
