Earlier this month, Union Pacific Railroad began a major track maintenance project on a Portland-to-Eugene, Ore., mainline.

To be completed July 23, the project includes installing more than 60 miles of rail and 93,000 ties, and surfacing and lining track.

Crews comprising 160 employees work in eight-days-on, seven-days-off cycles to complete the project. Traffic is curfewed from from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The project is part of UP’s more than $1 billion track maintenance budget for 2005.
