advertisement
Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend $9.1 million to improve a line between Altoona and Rusk, Wis.
To be completed by September's end, the project calls for removing and installing 28,000 ties, spreading 8,400 tons of ballast and replacing road surfaces at 36 grade crossings. Crews replaced more than 12 miles of rail on the line in May.
The project is part of UP's $3.1 billion capital spending program for 2008, which earmarks $1.6 billion for track improvements.
