Rail News: Maintenance Of Way
Last month, Union Pacific Railroad began a $32 million track improvement project on a line between St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo.
Scheduled to be completed by November, the project calls for removing and installing 182,000 ties, spreading more than 258,000 tons of ballast, replacing surfaces at 173 grade crossings and replacing curve rail.
The project will delay Amtrak trains operating between St. Louis and Kansas City, but the national intercity passenger railroad is developing an alternate service plan, UP said. Each day, Amtrak operates two eastbound and two westbound trains, and UP operates about 50 freight trains across Missouri.
