UP upgrades track in Illinois, ups train speeds in Oklahoma

Union Pacific Railroad is improving infrastructure in Illinois and speeding up trains in Oklahoma.
The Class I plans to spend $5.4 million to upgrade track between Coulterville and Collins, Ill. To be completed by April's end, the project calls for installing 37,000 ties, spreading 17,000 tons of rock ballast and replacing road surfaces at 62 grade crossings.
Meanwhile, UP will increase train speed from 50 mph to 60 mph through the city limits of Oologah, Okla., by mid-April, and from 20 mph to 40 mph through Muskogee, Okla., by month's end. The railroad will boost speed in increments of five mph per week.
The Class I recently improved track in the areas to accommodate higher train speeds.
