The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) board recently approved spending $50 million during the next six years to rehabilitate 206 escalators, and $43 million during the next four years to extend elevator and escalator maintenance contracts.

In 2000, WMATA implemented a 10-year escalator maintenance and rehabilitation program designed to improve service reliability.
