The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will resume its rebuilding effort known as “Metro Forward” on April 16 after taking a break for several weeks during Cherry Blossom season, agency officials announced.
During 2012’s first three months, WMATA rehabilitated eight escalators, advanced rebuilding efforts on three elevators, and installed 15,760 linear feet of rail, 23,501 fasteners and 4,297 wood ties, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement.
In addition, WMATA announced plans to install new “Guarded No. 8” switches — a key federal safety recommendation — in May. Later this week, a WMATA committee will consider a request to reprogram $14 million for numerous improvements, including a life-safety modernization to advance upgrades to wayside third rail emergency trip stations.
Metro Forward is the largest capital program in WMATA’s history, “and the biggest single undertaking since the construction of the system itself,” said Rob Troup, WMATA’s assistant general manager of transit infrastructure and engineering services.
