The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) last week wrapped up early and $450,000 under budget critical track repairs and infrastructure upgrades on portions of the Blue, Orange and Silver lines in downtown Washington, D.C.

Service on parts of those lines had been suspended Dec. 20-30 so that the work could be completed in time for New Year's Eve. During that time, crews replaced nearly 2,400 feet of track; replaced grout pads, rail fasteners and studs; conducted water mitigation work to keep tunnels dry; replaced insulators that protect the powered third rail; replaced signaling switch machines; upgraded platform edge lighting; and deep cleaned stations.

"This is the busiest section of our system, which required critical work to keep the system reliable and safe," said WMATA General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke in a press release.

The construction was part of WMATA's six-year, $12 billion capital improvement program. This is the third consecutive major construction project that was completed earlier than planned, WMATA officials said.
