The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) has approved $10,000 in grant funding to help rebuild a high-traffic grade crossing at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. complex in Longview, Washington.

The funding will come from the state’s Grade Crossing Protection Fund. Citing safety and traffic concerns, Nippon Dynawave requested the replacement of the crossing, which is owned by BNSF Railway Co., at the intersection located within its complex. The asphalt at the crossing has deteriorated significantly, creating hazards for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians, UTC officials said in a press release.

Nippon Dynaware will fund the majority of project's cost of $52,000. BNSF will provide $10,000 worth of labor to install new roadbed, ties, rail and concrete crossing panels.

The project must be completed by June 15, 2023, according to the UTC.
