The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will host a public meeting Feb. 22 at an Amtrak station in Sturtevant to present plans for proposed track and signal improvements in Kenosha and Racine counties along a Canadian Pacific corridor.

The proposed “Truesdell Crossovers” project calls for installing two crossovers, upgrading two existing hot box detectors, building two setout tracks, creating access roads, upgrading the signal system and improving communications. Construction is slated to begin in spring.

The improvements will provide additional alternatives for passenger and freight trains when one of the two mainlines along the corridor is out of service due to maintenance, construction activity or a disabled train, WisDOT officials said in a meeting notice, adding that track outages can cause passenger train delays. The project is designed to improve the reliability of Amtrak’s Hiawatha and Empire Builder services in Wisconsin, they said.

WisDOT also is accepting written comments on the project until March 2.
