Wisconsin grants help fund two freight-rail projects

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker recently announced the 2011 recipients of the state’s Transportation Economic Assistance (TEA) grants, which are administered through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and awarded to municipalities to foster economic growth through transportation-related improvement projects.
Among the 10 TEA grants totaling more than $3 million, the state awarded:
• $650,000 to the city of Waukesha to build two rail spurs for the expansion of Weldall Manufacturing Inc.; and
• $73,500 to Marinette County to improve spur tracks in the town of Beecher for Thilmany Paper’s new rail yard.
Since it was created in 1987, the TEA grant program has provided more than $85 million for 313 projects. Grants are available up to $1 million for projects that generate economic development, benefit the public and can start within three years, according to WisDOT. Grants can cover up to 50 percent of a project’s total cost.
