The Federal Railroad Administration has accepted the Wyoming Department of Transportation's (WYDOT) request for a grant to help fund the replacement of two bridges on Interstate 80 that cross over Union Pacific Railroad track, WYDOT announced yesterday.
Built in the late 1950s, the structures are located on the eastbound and westbound lanes about 11 miles west of Cheyenne, WYDOT officials said in a press release.
Funding will come from the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement Special Transportation Circumstances Program, which is directed to states that do not have intercity passenger-rail service. WYDOT will receive up to 80% of funds from the federal government and will match the remaining amount of the $18 million project.
Construction of the new bridges could take up to five years to complete.
"This project will help to improve safety for both the railroad and the traveling public," said WYDOT Assistant Chief Engineer of Engineering and Planning Keith Fulton.
