Norfolk Southern Railway and the Port of Virginia recently inaugurated a new double-stack service designed to expand the port’s reach into central North Carolina, a growing southeastern market, port officials said in a prepared statement.

The six-day-per-week service will serve Greensboro, N.C., and focus on the textile, furniture, retail, chemical and agriculture industries. NS will extend service from Greensboro to Charlotte, N.C.; Atlanta and Memphis, Tenn.

The service will provide cargo owners an alternative to trucking freight out of ports in South Carolina and Georgia, Virginia port officials said.
 
"Many North Carolina-based cargo owners have expressed a very genuine interest in this service because of the economics of bringing their cargo through our port and into this market by rail," said Virginia Port Authority (VPA) Executive Director Jerry Bridges.

Meanwhile, CSX Transportation on Oct. 10 began offering a container service between the Port of Virginia and a North Baltimore, Ohio, intermodal terminal. The service will connect port customers to markets in Findlay and Toledo, Ohio, and Fort Wayne, Ind., VPA officials said.

“In those three markets combined, there are several manufacturers. The service is seen as another asset that helps the port expand its reach into the nation,” they said.

In first-quarter 2012, CSXT plans to begin providing container service to and from the North Baltimore terminal and Chicago, Portsmouth, Va., and APM terminals, according to the VPA.
