Norfolk Southern eyes fruits of expansion at Marcellus Shale sand terminal

Trains hauling sand used to extract natural gas from the Marcellus Shale soon will be able to unload five times faster thanks to a $20 million upgrade at a sand and transloading terminal in Horseheads, N.Y., Norfolk Southern Railway officials announced on Friday.

Owned and operated by Carriage House Partners and RLB Holdings, the terminal is in the final stages of new a 90,000-square-foot transloading facility that's scheduled for completion by Oct. 8. The owners also broke ground last month on a second 90,000-square-foot transload facility slated to open in 2013. The new facilities — both of which are designed to handle sand — will allow trains to unload 100 cars within 48 hours, NS officials said in a prepared statement.

The terminal "soon will be the premier Marcellus Shale distribution center in the Northeast," said David Lawson, NS' vice president of industrial products.

NS, which has served the terminal since 2009, unloaded 1,800 and 2,600 cars at the facility in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Through 2012's first half, 1,400 cars of sand were unloaded at the terminal.
