Norfolk Southern Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman, U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), and other federal, state and local officials yesterday officially dedicated the Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility in Greencastle, Pa.

The Class I's $97 million intermodal terminal connects central Pennsylvania, western Maryland and northern Virginia to domestic and world markets, NS officials said in a press release. Located near Interstate 81, the facility was funded by a public-private partnership involving $52 million in NS funds and $45 million in state dollars.

"This terminal represents a milestone for Norfolk Southern and Franklin County," said Moorman. "It is positioning Norfolk Southern as the green transportation choice and serving the region's freight transportation needs."

The terminal features 670 paved trailer/container parking spots and an administration building that meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification standards.

The terminal is part of NS' Crescent Corridor, a 2,500-mile intermodal route between New Jersey and Louisiana that helps moderate truck traffic on congested roadways and reduce carbon emissions, NS officials said. The facility is the third Crescent Corridor intermodal terminal NS has opened since mid-2012, joining facilities in Birmingham, Ala., and Memphis, Tenn.

A fourth Crescent Corridor terminal located in Charlotte, N.C., is slated to open later this year. NS also is expanding capacity at two intermodal facilities in Harrisburg, Pa.
