The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has approved more than $1.7 million for safety upgrades at grade crossings in two counties.

Norfolk Southern Railway will install flashing lights and gates at the Lincoln Street crossing in Scioto County. The work must be completed by Sept. 6, 2024.

Federal funds will cover $251,082 of the project's cost while NS will contribute $44,308 to complete the upgrades.

Meanwhile, CSX will install flashing lights and gates at three crossings in Butler County. The work also must be completed by Sept. 6, 2024.

Federal funds will cover $1.4 million of project costs.

PUCO is responsible for evaluating Ohio’s public crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices.
