Norfolk Southern Railway has restored a historic train depot in East Palestine, Ohio, and donated the structure to the village, following a pledge made last year in the wake of the February 2023 derailment and chemical release, according to a report on the NS website.

"We promised to rehabilitate the facility and turn it over to the community for its long-term use and today we are doing just that," NS CEO Alan Shaw said May 16.

Plans to restore the depot, including a renovation of the building’s exterior, were announced in May 2023

In addition to the $1 million restoration, NS provided a $100,000 grant for the village to customize the interior to fulfill the community’s intended use of the depot.

The depot was built in 1905 by the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railway, part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Ownership eventually passed to Penn Central and Conrail before passing to NS in 1998.
