Norfolk Southern Railway recently last week announced a $500,000 grant to support economic development in East Palestine, Ohio.
The grant will fund the hiring of an independent, private-sector economic development consultant who will work for the village to "create a plan to support long-term prosperity" in East Palestine, NS President and CEO Alan Shaw said in a press release.
The consultant's planned initiatives include engaging with community and business leaders; assessing the current state of the village's economy; setting achievable economic development goals; and helping the village implement a plan to foster and support economic growth.
The grant is part of the Class I's commitment to help the community rebound after a NS train derailed Feb. 3 in East Palestine.
