The Port of Virginia announced yesterday that Norfolk Southern Railway will launch a daily rail service from the port to its regional intermodal terminal near Memphis, Tennessee.

NS’ intermodal terminal in Rossville, Tennessee, is located on the railroad’s Crescent Corridor, port officials said in a press release.

“Both exporters and importers have asked us [NS and the port] to develop a high-quality Memphis rail service,” said Virginia Port Authority CEO and Executive Director Stephen Edwards. “When we first discussed this possibility, we agreed consistency was critical to developing a first-class product that provides daily service to and from this market. We have spent the past six months working together to ensure we are both ready and capable to meet customer expectations.”

Memphis is one of four U.S. cities served by five Class Is. Cargo moving through Memphis can reach 45 states — plus Canada and Mexico — by rail within two days, according to the Greater Memphis Chamber.

The port is also served by CSX.

Meanwhile, NS has reached agreements to provide up to seven paid sick days per year to members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, NS officials said in a press release.

The railroad will provide more than 1,350 employees with four new days of annual paid sick leave, plus flexibility to use up to three additional existing days of paid time off as sick leave.

Eight of the 12 unions whose members work for NS have now locally negotiated for paid sick days, benefiting about 5,900 railroaders, NS officials said. Last week, NS announced it reached agreements with the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, Transportation Workers-Mechanical Department and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
