Norfolk Southern Railway is on the shortlist for this year’s Reuters Automotive D.R.I.V.E. Honours, which recognizes innovators and leaders in the automotive industry.
Reuters recognized NS in the “Reducing Emissions” category for its investments and achievements in sustainable freight transportation. It was the only freight transportation company recognized on the shortlist. Fifteen award winners in five categories will be announced Oct. 21 at the Automotive D.R.I.V.E. Conference in Detroit.
The largest transporter of automotive products in North America, NS has strived to reduce its carbon footprint, helping automotive manufacturers collectively avoid about 15 million metric tons of carbon emissions by using rail instead of trucks, NS officials reported in a press release.
While helping to lower collective automotive supply chain emissions by providing an alternative to long-distance trucking, NS has also released its first Climate Transition Plan, which lays out the the company's actions to combat its own supply chain emissions, including a target 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 2034.
