Norfolk Southern Railway last week announced 10 examples of how the Class I achieved progress in 2023.
According to an article on the NS website, the examples included:• launching a safety improvement initiative following the February 2023 derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Efforts to enhance safety included a partnership with NS partnered with Atkins Nuclear Secured (ANS) to bring the nuclear standard of safety to rail; the introduction of a six-point safety plan to guide safety actions; and the opening of regional safety training center in East Palestine that will provide ongoing, free training for first responders from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia;• becoming the first Class I railroad to reach an agreement on paid sick leave for all craft railroaders;• creating a "First and Final Mile Markets" department to help customers move freight by providing rail, terminal and trucking options;• working with drayage partners to better serve intermodal customers; • launching a digital train inspection portal; and• launching a rail emissions tool to calculate the carbon savings.
