By year’s end, Norfolk Southern Corp. plans to hire 500 workers in eight states because of growing demand for freight-rail service and a mounting need to replace retiring employees in the coming years.
The railroad is seeking applicants for conductor, freight-car repair worker, machinist, signal maintainer and track worker positions in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.
“Norfolk Southern has hired more than 3,500 employees so far this year and anticipates adding 2,600 employees in 2012,” said Cindy Earhart, the Class I’s vice president of human resources, in a prepared statement.
