Norfolk Southern Railway announced June 20 that plans for revitalizing City Park in East Palestine, Ohio, have been approved by the East Palestine City Council.

With the city’s approval, NS now can develop a full master plan for the park. NS will fund the park’s improvements at a cost of about $25 million, company officials said in a press release.

The Class I has enlisted Pittsburgh-based architecture firm Michael Baker International to spearhead the park’s transformation. Proposed improvements to the park include a new aquatic center and pool house; three new modern playgrounds; upgraded baseball fields; new basketball and tennis courts; a new amphitheater with electrified stage; and general upgrades to facilities and walkways.

The council’s approval marks an important step in fulfilling NS President and CEO Alan Shaw’s promise to improve the city park as part of the company’s financial commitment to East Palestine’s recovery from the NS train derailment that occurred there on Feb. 3.

The park donation brings the company’s total financial commitment to East Palestine to about $62 million, with more to come, NS officials said.
