Norfolk Southern Railway and derailment and environmental contractors have transported 11.7 million gallons of impacted water off site, removed 22,769 tons of waste soil, flushed 5,200 feet of impacted waterways and sampled more than 300 private drinking water wells in East Palestine, Ohio.
The Class I is regularly updating its NS Making It Right website, which the railroad launched to keep area residents informed of the environmental cleanup at the site where an NS train carrying hazardous materials derailed Feb. 3.
"Norfolk Southern team members remain on scene, assisted by multiple derailment and environmental contractors. In addition to working closely with first responders, we are coordinating with federal, state and local agencies," the website states.
The website includes a seven-day "lookahead" outline of work to be conducted and what can be expected.
NS also reported that it has conducted dioxin and furans waste soil sampling using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Method 8290A.
"The results of the soil waste dioxin and furans sampling show that none of the samples exceed the universal treatment standards and therefore are acceptable to be disposed of at designated landfills licensed to receive such waste," the website states.
Local residents have expressed concerns about dioxin levels in the environment following the derailment.
