A Norfolk Southern Railway intermodal terminal to be built in Prichard, W.Va., has been dubbed "The Heartland Intermodal Gateway at Prichard."
The West Virginia Public Port Authority chose the name, according to the Rahall Transportation Institute (RTI).
Mountaineer Contractors Inc. was awarded a $27.4 million contract in August 2012 to construct the 100-acre facility off Route 52 in Wayne County. A groundbreaking will be held later this year.
Slated to open in 2014, the facility will be part of NS' Heartland Corridor, which the Class I developed to facilitate more efficient double-stack intermodal movements between the Norfolk, Va., port region and Midwestern markets in and around Chicago and Columbus, Ohio.
"The facility will offer industrial and warehousing space coupled with intermodal transportation access," said RTI Director and Chief Executive Officer Robert Plymale in a prepared statement.
