Yesterday, Norfolk Southern Corp. announced it appointed Michael Wheeler vice president of engineering to succeed Timothy Drake, who plans to retire on Oct. 31. The Class I also named Terry Evans VP of transportation to succeed Wheeler.
Wheeler and Evans, whose appointments are effective Nov. 1, will report to Executive VP and Chief Operating Officer Mark Manion.
Wheeler joined NS in 1985 as a research engineer. He since has held positions of increasing responsibility in operations, including the transportation VP post he assumed in 2009.
Most recently VP of process engineering, Evans joined NS in 1979 as a management trainee in the operations division. He since has held positions of increasing responsibility in operations.
A 36-year NS veteran, Drake has served as VP of engineering since 2007. He joined the railroad as an assistant track supervisor and later served in various engineering positions.
"Tim Drake and his team, quite simply, have set the standard for safe, reliable rail infrastructure in this country," said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman in a prepared statement. "We truly appreciate Tim's contributions and service."
