Norfolk Southern Corp. yesterday announced it received the U.S. Green Building Council Georgia chapter’s Chrysalis Award in the new construction transformation category for the sustainable design and construction of its Atlanta headquarters, which opened a year ago.
The Chrysalis Awards recognize people and projects that represent the meaning of sustainability, NS officials said in a press release. NS was one of 12 USGBC Project Award finalists across multiple categories.
Earlier this year, USGBC awarded the NS headquarters with LEED Gold Certification for its design and construction, which involved sustainable site development, water conservation, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. The certification is the most widely used green-building rating system in the world, NS officials said. The Class I earned all possible points in the water efficiency category, which recognizes significant indoor and outdoor water use reduction.
The railroad was honored with the award at a Nov. 15 event.
