Norfolk Southern Corp. yesterday announced it's offering starting bonuses of up to $5,000 for conductor trainees staffed in priority locations and $2,500 for those stationed in other locations.

Priority locations include Binghamton and Buffalo, New York; Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Manassas and Roanoke, Virginia; Harrisburg and Conway, Pennsylvania; Birmingham and Sheffield, Alabama; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Linwood, North Carolina.

"We are actively hiring people who want a high degree of responsibility, thrive in autonomy and desire a sense of pride in the work they do," said Brad Dodd, NS' director of talent acquisition, in a press release. "In return, they can expect great pay, best-in-class healthcare benefits, technical training and professional growth opportunities."

Once training is completed, NS conductors are guaranteed a minimum annual pay of $52,000. Conductor’s annual guaranteed minimum earnings progressively increase over their next four years of service to approximately $63,500.

If promoted to locomotive engineer, a conductor could earn a guaranteed minimum annual pay of about $94,000. Many engineers earn more than $100,000 annually, said Dodd.
