Norfolk Southern Railway awarded a total of $6 million in grants last year to 408 community organizations through its "Safety First" and "Thriving Communities" programs.
The grants went to organizations that make a positive impact on communities in the railroad's 22-state network, NS officials said in a press release.
Through the Safety First program, the Class I awarded $2.2 million to 184 organizations in 19 states to enhance emergency response capabilities and promote community safety Through the Thriving Communities program, NS awarded $4.1 million to 224 organizations in 20 states for sustainability, workforce development and housing stability initiatives.
Highlights of this year’s grants include replacing and funding firefighting and emergency response equipment; supporting invasive plant management and environmental conservation programs; funding skilled labor and job readiness; and providing funding for programs that help people facing homelessness, hunger and health-care insecurities.
Launched in 2023, the award programs align with the railroad's four community-impact areas of focus: safety, sustainability, workforce development and thriving communities. The grant application process for 2025 will open April 1 and close Sept. 1. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis. For more information on applying for grants, click here.
