British Columbia's TransLink earlier this month marked the start of construction of upgrades to the Joyce-Collingwood SkyTrain station to improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security.

Expected to cost $26 million (in Canadian dollars), the upgrade is being funded by TransLink and the governments of Canada and British Columbia. The improvements will be complete by fall 2017, TransLink officials said in a press release.

The upgrades include a new elevator and escalators in the east stationhouse, improved station design with better lighting and visibility, and better integration with the surrounding community, TransLink officials said. Additionally, the work will bring the station into line with modern accessibility standards, improve the transfer experience for passengers arriving by bus and increase the capacity of SkyTrain's Expo Line.

Facilitating 30,000 SkyTrain trips and 12,000 bus trips each day, the station is the fourth busiest on the Expo Line. As the number of passengers using the station grows, the upgrades are needed to increase capacity and improve accessibility, TransLink officials said.
