CTA orders smart card equipment for Cermak Branch
advertisement
Chicago Transit Authority Dec. 27 awarded Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. a $3.3 million contract to provide smart card-ready fare collection equipment for CTA’s Blue Line Cermak (Douglas) Branch rehabilitation project.
The Cermak Branch (also known as the Douglas Branch) was built between 1895 and 1912, and serves 10,000 passengers daily at its 11 stations. Joint venture Kiewit-Delgado was contracted to renovate eight of the stations as part of a $482 million rehabilitation project.
CTA introduced contactless smart cards to its passengers in August 2000 under a pilot program, and recently ordered from Cubic an additional 300,000 smart cards, which are usable on CTA’s rail and bus systems, and Chicago’s Pace suburban bus system.
The Cermak Branch equipment is scheduled for installation in third-quarter 2002.
