Peruvian railway begins tourist services

Ferrocarril Central Andino in mid-July began two passengers services, both oriented to the tourist market.
Geared toward the domestic market, a Sunday service from Lima would operate through December, transporting families to the railway’s park at San Bartolome Station.
Another service, geared toward the foreign market, would offer once-a-month weekend excursions from Lima to destinations in the Andes, traveling three miles above sea level. A train to Huancayo is scheduled to leave Aug. 30 and return Sept. 1; another, traveling to Cerro de Pasco, would leave Oct. 5 and return Oct. 8.
"We believe this service will make an important contribution to Peru’s tourism industry, and has been an objective since privatization of the railway in 1999," said FCCA General Manager Jack Roberson in a prepared statement. "With our recent acquisition of new locomotives and after substantial investment in infrastructure, we are for the first time in a position to provide this service without disruption to our freight business."
