On Sept. 17, New Jersey Transit awarded contracts to two cleaning firms and introduced its new "extraordinary cleaning" (dubbed E-Cleaning) program standards for trains, buses and rail stations.



Bradford & Byrd of Freehold landed a one-year, $289,068 contract to clean Princeton, Hamilton and Trenton stations. Two one-year options would raise the contract’s value to $896,100 over the three years.



TUCS Cleaning Service Inc. was awarded the second contract and will be responsible for cleaning North Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Metropark, Metuchen and Edison stations. TUCS’ one-year contract is for $187,740; similar options would increase its value to $574,559 over a three-year duration.



As part of the E-Cleaning program, workers will be daily required to scrub all surfaces on NJ Transit rail vehicles, including ceilings and walls. Windows and seats are to be washed and wiped with a static-free cloth.



Meanwhile, the agency last month began a new E-Cleaning cycle for its 230 Arrow III rail cars. Under the new plan, those cars are to receive an intensive scrubbing every 45 days compared with the previous 90 days or less.



NJ Transit workers plan in October to begin E-Cleaning the remaining fleet of 482 Comet cars, moving them to the same 45-day schedule.



Workers will continue to provide general cleaning for the cars on a daily basis.
