Sound Transit LRVs set sail for America

advertisement

While Sound Transit continues construction of Tacoma Link Light Rail, which is scheduled to begin service in September 2003, three light rail vehicles (LRVs) were poised to set sale from Antwerp, Belgium, to the Port of Tacoma.

The cars have traveled a long way already: Inekon and Skoda Dopravni Technica manufactured the cars at Skoda’s facility in the Czech Republic. They were trucked via the Autobahn to the port at Antwerp, where they were loaded onto a ship owned by Star Shipping AS, of Bergen, Norway.

Star Shipping planned to leave port July 26, cross the Atlantic Ocean, then travel through the Panama Canal, heading north making ports of call in Long Beach, Calif., Vancouver, Wash. Pending weather and other conditions, the cars are expected to arrive at Port of Tacoma in early September.
