Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) April 29 approved a $7.9 million contract with Richmond, Calif.-based C. Overaa Construction to build a four-level parking structure just north of Fruitvale Station.


The structure, which C. Overaa will begin building this month and complete by fall 2003, will provide 447 replacement parking stalls, enabling BART to prepare for its long-planned transit village.


The village's first segment, under construction on the station's east side between 23rd and 35th streets, comprises two mixed-use complexes housing a child development center, senior citizen center, medical clinic, Cesar Chavez Library, housing, and retail and office space. BART officials expect to complete the village's first phase about mid-2004.


BART obtained funding for parking structure through a federal grant and state Measure B monies.


C. Overaa, which built four other parking structures for BART at Daly City, Concord, Walnut Creek and El Cerrito del Norte, recently won a contract to build BART's Pittsburg/Bay Point Station.
