Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. recently completed factory tests to bring the agency’s multi-modal smart card automatic fare collection system, SmarTrip®, onto buses — WMATA is adding an average of 3,000 SmarTrip customers weekly.



WMATA patrons currently can use SmarTrip cards on all trains and park-and-ride facilities. Adding bus capabilities would be a major milestone in marking WMATA’s progress toward attaining a regional fare collection program linking payment for WMATA buses serving Washington, D.C., and parts of Maryland and Virginia, and the agency’s existing network with one fare medium, according to a statement prepared July 15.



Next on the smart-card agenda: Introducing revenue service on the buses.



General Farebox Inc. teamed with Cubic in integrating its fare boxes with Cubic’s Nextfare™ terminal architecture computer hardware and software. The two companies also are teaming up to provide a similar system for Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
