WMATA takes out trash — cans, that is

Some types of increased security are meant to be seen, such as additional uniformed patrols and K-9 units; others are designed to be less visible. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Oct. 5 announced more evidence of increased security that’s very visible: The agency’s removed trash and recycling bins from between fare gates and station platforms inside Metrorail stations to decrease the number of possible locations where someone might leave a harmful package or device.

"We are taking this action to increase security with an eye toward the safety of our customers," said WMATA General Manager Richard White in a prepared statement. "I hope that customers understand and will do their part and pitch in by not leaving their trash in the stations or rail cars."

White also asked that passengers "report any suspicious package or activity to a Metro employee or police officer."
