Rail News: Passenger Rail

Smile! You're on WMATA-cam

About 1,400 video cameras placed in Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Metrorail stations enable managers to monitor station activity — but only as it happens. For now, no record is kept of those events.

WMATA’s board Sept. 20 decided to purchase $2.3 million worth of video recording equipment to enable the cameras to record rail station incidents.

The cost would be covered by a refund in the same amount WMATA recently received from Potomac Electric Power Co., enabling the agency to equip most of its 83 stations in spring. Funds to equip the remaining stations would be requested in the fiscal year 2003 budget.
