BART expands auto-sharing program at Colma Station

advertisement

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in October 2000 began an auto-sharing program at its Fremont Station, promising to review the program after a year and possibly expand it to other stations. On Jan. 7, it expanded into the Colma Station with the opening of a Hertz Corp. "shared-car" facility.

The idea is to reduce the need for parking at stations by offering a daily car rental to transport someone from home to the station, or from the station to work, and back again. The dual use enables two people to use a car, which uses only one parking space for a shorter time period.

At Colma, the program provides:

¥ 25 parking spaces for subscribers;

¥ Guaranteed parking near the station entrance for subscribers;

¥ All cleaning, servicing and maintenance of the car, including gasoline refueling for up to 1,000 miles per month;

¥ Larger vehicles are available for an additional charge; and

¥ Standard car-rental services for non-subscribers would be offered at Hertz retail rates based on vehicle availability.

The monthly fee for station-to-work users is $305 for an electric Th!nk City vehicle and $330 for a compact car; station-to-home users pay $339 for electric and $380 for a compact. Hertz also offers a $430 monthly corporate-use rate for companies with multiple users. Insurance is not included, but is offered.
