Utah Transit Authority (UTA) last week received the 10th of a 10-vehicle light-rail order from Siemens Transportation Systems Inc. — in time to help UTA serve commuters during Salt Lake City’s upcoming 2002 Winter Olympics.
Siemens completed the order for 10 SD160s, which complement UTA’s 23 vehicles currently in revenue service, in 22 months. Each SD160 can carry 185 passengers at speeds up to 65 mph. UTA now handles 20,000 daily commuters.
On Dec. 15, UTA opened an extension that serves University of Utah stadium, site of the games’ opening and closing ceremonies, which will be held Feb. 8 and Feb. 24, respectively.
