Global trading and investment firm Sumitomo Corp. of America (SCOA) June 26 announced it had acquired from Williams Controls Inc. the assets of GeoFocus Inc., which specializes in providing wireless geographic information systems, and global positioning system applications and services.

GeoFocus Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Jolene Molitoris will retain her titles in the new company, GeoFocus L.L.C, which will be a wholly owned subsidiary of SCOA. Prior to joining GeoFocus, Molitoris for eight years served as Federal Railroad Administrator.

"We see a strong business complement with the work that our company has been doing in supplying equipment and technologies to mass transit systems throughout North America, and with the niche that GeoFocus has carved out for itself in the marketplace," said SCOA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kenji Kajiwara in a prepared statement.

GeoFocus’ TrainTrac® Train Information Management System provides train location, performance to schedule, automated messaging, automatic reports generation through commuter rail agencies’ networks. The product was developed in 1997 with south Florida’s Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority.

GeoFocus has since expanded, contracting with Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp., Southern California Regional Rail Authority’s Metrolink, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and Utah Transit Authority’s TRAX light rail.
