New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) plans to resume a concrete tie installation program while completing work on three other track projects.



From June 18 through Aug. 26, LIRR will install 36,000 steel-reinforced concrete ties and replace 29 miles of continuous welded rail on its four mainline tracks between Jamaica and Queens Village, N.Y. During the summers of 1997, 1998 and 2000, the railroad installed new track and more than 75,000 concrete ties between Jamaica and the East River Tunnels, and on the Port Washington Branch.



Meanwhile, LIRR also will be rehabilitating AirTrain/Jamaica Station, installing a new signal system between Jamaica and Flatbush Avenue, and completing work on the MTA New City Transit portion of the Flatbush Avenue Terminal.



The projects likely will impact LIRR service, but "every effort will be made" to minimize customer inconvenience, LIRR President Ken Bauer said in a prepared statement.
