Singapore advances automatic line construction with Alstom

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) June 8 awarded the Alstom Transport/ST Elect consortium a $144 million contract for phase 2 construction of its automatic Marina Metro Line. Alstom’s share of the deal is $104 million.

LTA in December 2000 awarded Alstom a turnkey contract for the project’s first phase, which comprised 3.5 line miles and six stations. Phase 2 would extend the line 3 miles and add five stations. Plans call for the automatic line eventually to extend 22 miles, circling the island of Singapore.

As part of Alstom’s phase 2 contribution, the company will supply seven three-car Metropolis™ trainsets, the signaling system and related infrastructure, and will manage the project.

LTA plans to start taking delivery of the trainsets in 2004, and place the units into service beginning in 2006.
